Meet our team
Dan Orchard
Apprentice Carpenter
Work and experience
I’m currently a Level 2 Carpentry Apprentice at Dan Cook Carpentry & Building Ltd. I’ve been working in the construction industry for around three years now. I started out with a plastering company before joining Dan’s team nearly two years ago to focus on carpentry.
I enjoy all aspects of carpentry and am still learning every day, but if I had to choose, I’d say I really enjoy second fix and finishing carpentry, things like hanging doors or fitting kitchens. It’s satisfying to work on features that clients will see and use every day.
I’ve completed both my Level 1 and Level 2 Diplomas in Construction and Building Crafts, which laid a solid foundation for my apprenticeship and on-site experience.
Favourite project
One moment I’m especially proud of was hanging my first door and building my first stud wall. Both felt like real milestones. Because I move between different sites and jobs, I get to experience a wide range of tasks, which keeps the work varied and interesting.
What I enjoy most about working at Dan Cook Carpentry & Building is the team environment. Everyone is friendly and respectful, and as an apprentice, I’ve found it’s a great place to learn. The more experienced carpenters are always willing to help. I also like that we work on such a wide range of projects, which really helps with building my skills.
When it comes to craftsmanship and customer service, I believe in always taking pride in my work. I want every job to be something I can be proud of, and I always treat clients with respect. We’re building for them, and it’s important they’re happy with the end result.
Getting to know you
I was inspired to get into the trade through my grandad, who was a carpenter and boat builder, and by helping my dad with DIY projects at home. I’ve always been a practical, hands-on person, so carpentry felt like a natural fit.
Outside of work, I like to play football, watch Formula 1, and go to music festivals. I’m also a big fan of Plymouth Argyle, and I enjoy going to matches with my mates. When I’m with family, I love going for bike rides and walks with our dog.
A fun fact about me – I once had a go at mechanical bull riding at a festival. Let’s just say I lasted a lot less time than I thought I would!
